Ruby Cohen (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. By working in forms of repetition and compulsion, she explores the relationship between materiality and history. Her work serves as a dialogue between her practices and her grandmothers, and becomes a physical manifestation of the tension, irony, and contradictions between differing American cultures. She grew up in Gowanus, Brooklyn and graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in Art History and Studio Art. While studying at Oberlin, Cohen participated in multiple group exhibitions, such as 3 consecutive Art Walks, Third Date: Junior Showcase, Dog Pile: Senior Half-time Exhibition, and Ways To Stub Your Toe: Senior Capstone Exhibition. She also worked as a monitor in Oberlin’s reproducible media lab. Cohen was awarded a scholarship to attend a class at Ox-Bow School of Art & Artist’s Residency in Saugatuck Township, MI, and at Penland School of Craft in Mitchell County, NC. Cohen is proficient in the use of adobe photoshop, printing presses and processes, looms, and sewing machines. She also has extensive fabrication knowledge, trained in operating table, miter, and circular saws, bandsaws, planers, drills, routers, sanders, and Universal VLS 4.6 laser cutter.
